I called Earthway to see about replacement parts and as I explained what I needed......she IMMEDIATELY SAID " It's the LEFT SIDE" right ??? Said it happens all the time. The fertilizer initially drops on that side first, and the dust works it's way into the hole where the sliver tone "V" brace attaches to the struts. I guess when I "rinsed" it out, water gets into that strut and cant be "dried". Couple that moisture along with the fine fertilizer dust year after year.........eventually it eats through from the INSIDE OUT. You would never know until it's too late. As I was making a closer inspection of that area, I noticed all the nuts and bolts were getting rusted too.......but only on that side. After pricing replacement parts adding shipping fees and taxed...... I could get a brand new one for about $30 more and use the old one for spare parts. Before any fertilizer sees this new unit, I'm treating all metal nuts and blots with either teflon or grease and putting protective coating of oil or such INSIDE the metal struts then seal the hole where the brace goes through both sides. That should prevent the dust from gaining entry. If it wasn't for that one strut going bad.. this thing would last a lifetime. Holds a full 15,000sq ft 44lb bag of Scotts, no problem. I also like the real tires which are inflatable, not some cheap plastic. I'm just thrilled that Amazon decided to carry this item again. Update Sept 2009: I have had this spreader for a year. It started tipping once the metal on the hitch bent from use and was no longer able to keep it stable. I bent the hitch back and put water in the pneumatic tires to make it more stable. One of the vertical supports collapsed the 4th time I used it. Fertilizer had got into the hollow tube and had caused it to rust from the inside. Earthway offered to sell me a replacement at dealer cost and noted that I should coat the inside with oil to make it more rust resistant. I opted to make a wooden replacement.
The spreader setting does not always remain the same when you shut it OFF and back ON while spreading. I have tightened it very tight but when you are apreading you may put more force on it than your realize and it will slide down and can greatly increase the application rate. It needs teeth so that it will not slide so easily.
This spreader needs some design enhancements to make it a longer term good buy. It turned out to not be as good as I first thought.
